Description
I found this Giant Peacok Moth (Saturnia Pyri, Grand Paon de nuit in French) in my garden last Thursday. I think it was a female since its antennas were rather tiny. The poor one was half dead and could hardly move. Her wings were torn and she was hanging on a blade of grass with the last strength she had. I guess she was already at the end of her short life as an adult. Can you imagine this ? Having just one week, no more, to fly around and find a partner, without eating a thing since nature hasn't even given you a mouth to do so... sounds romantic and tragical doesn't it ?
This species, the largest kind of Moth in Europe, is really rare and there was a special website dedicated to it where you could register any observation of them. Unfortunately it seems that the links I found in Wikipedia are dead now. But my Giant Peacock Moth will be recorded and admired here in deviantART, and thus remain alive as a memory.
I'd like to dedicate this picture to *Eolhin, a DArtist I'm watching now. She has some nice pictures of butterflies, you shall visit her gallery if you're interested in them. Her cats are really georgeous too ...

Thank you so much for the dedication!
Just think, if she ended her life in your yard, then perhaps she laid her eggs somewhere close, and in a year or so (not sure of the life cycle of these) you will have more of them there, and perhaps be able to get a picture of one intact. You should look up what the caterpillar and cocoons look like (if they function like butterflies), and look around your yard for them, to make sure they are protected.
